POWER OUTAGE ON MT. CONSTITUTION 400' and 235' TOWERS

UPDATED INFORMATION 2006-11-30 3:15 PM

--- THE GENERATOR PROBLEM HAS BEEN RECTIFIED, AND THE SYSTEM APPEARS TO BE RUNNING SMOOTHLY. THE GENERATOR SUFFERED A DIESEL FUEL LINE-FREEZE AS DIESEL FUEL TENDS TO 'GEL' AT EXTREMELY LOW TEMPERATURES. THIS PROBLEM, ACCOMPANIED BY AN UNFORESEEN SMALL FUEL LINE WEAK SPOT CAUSED THE ENGINE TO SEIZE, AND REQUIRED CONSIDERABLE THAWING BEFORE IT WOULD FLOW PROPERLY.
THE WEAK SPOT HAS BEEN REPAIRED, AND SHOULD CAUSE NO FURTHER INTERRUPTIONS, HOWEVER IT SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED THAT THE GENERATOR, BY NO MEANS, DELIVERS AS CLEAN A SINE-WAVE AS THE UTILITY POWER, AND WITH THE COLD WEATHER AND THE FUEL IN THE ELEMENTS AS IT IS, THERE COULD BE MOMENTARY SPIKES AND BROWN-OUTS. ANY REMOTELY-CONTROLLABLE, NON-ESSENTIAL DEVICES SHOULD BE POWERED DOWN UNTIL THE MAINS FROM OPALCO ARE BACK IN SERVICE. AT LAST REPORT, THERE WERE THREE MAJOR BREAK-POINTS IN THE UTILITY FEEDS AT DIFFERING POINTS ON THE MOUNTAIN, AND COULD BE DOWN THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND.

UPDATED INFORMATION 2006-11-28

---PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN GETTING THE SYSTEM UP AND RUNNING AGAIN. THE ROAD WAS HEAVILY BLOCKED BY SNOWDRIFTS, AS WELL AS TREE THAT NEED TO BE CHAINSAW-CUT OUT BEFORE VEHICLE ACCESS IS POSSIBLE. WE EXPECT TO HAVE ON-SITE REPAIRS COMMENCE IN THE MORNING HOURS WEDNESDAY.

2006-11-28 9:30 AM

---THE 235-FOOT AND 400-FOOT SITES SUFFERED A GENERATOR FAILURE LATE EVENING MONDAY. HEAVY SNOW AND HIGH WINDS HAVE LEFT THE SITE WITHOUT UTILITY MAINS, BUT ORCAS POWER AND LIGHT CO. HAS PRIORITIZED CLEARING THE FALLEN TREE BRANCHES NECESSARY TO FACILITATE THE RESTORATION OF THE UTILITY MAINS. AS SOON AS THE SITE IS ACCESSIBLE WE SHOULD HAVE THE GENERATOR BACK ONLINE, BARRING ANY UNFORSEEN FAULTS CAUSED BY THE WEATHER. AN UPDATE WILL FOLLOW....
